Solitude Serenade

Marmin Bay, Crete — Sunrise, 5:30 a.m.

It was 6:00 a.m. on my last morning in Crete. The sky was beginning to brighten, the bay completely still. As I walked the shoreline in search of one final sunrise shot, a single red boat caught my eye — quietly drifting in the calm water.

There was one problem: my tripod had been lost with my luggage by the airline. I’d spent the entire trip frustrated, convinced I wouldn’t capture anything worth keeping. So I steadied my camera on a stone wall, took a deep breath, and made the shot.

What I captured became more powerful than I expected. People told me it gave them a sense of calm and peace, the red boat anchoring the stillness of the morning. For me, Solitude Serenade is a reminder that even without the perfect tools, you can still create something meaningful — as long as you don’t give up.
